What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a large restoration that replaces or “bridges” the gap between two teeth with a fake tooth, called a pontic. The pontic is attached to the two neighboring teeth, which will be covered with crowns.

What is the procedure for dental bridge work?

Fitting and placement of a dental bridge is a two visit process.

During the first visit we re-contour the teeth next to your missing tooth so that the retainers can fit snugly over them. This may involve filling any hollowed-out areas of your teeth with a filling material and in some cases it may involve placing a stabilizing post within the tooth. We take impressions of your teeth, which serve as the model from which our laboratory will custom-make your bridge. We make a temporary covering to protect your teeth while your bridge is being made.

During the second visit, we remove the temporary covering and then check and fit your new permanent bridge to achieve a proper fit.

What is the dental bridge cost?

The cost of doing dental bridge work depends on the type of bridge and the amount of work to be done. Prior to starting the process we will review the cost of the procedure with you and, if you have dental plan coverage, with your dental insurance provider.

What is it like after I get my bridge?

Following your bridge insertion, it is not uncommon for the teeth to be slightly sensitive for one to two weeks. It may take a few weeks for the muscles in your face and mouth to become accustomed to your new bridge so you may have to cut food into small pieces and speak slower. Most patients find that their bridge gives them a greater confidence and that they smile more since they are no longer dealing with a “black space” in their mouth.

How long will my bridge last?

A bridge can last for many years if taken care of with brushing, flossing and regular hygiene visits. A bridge covers the portion of the tooth that is above the gum line. Decay can still start on the root of a tooth and work its way under the bridge therefore regular dental exams continue to be important to your oral health.

What is the best choice, a dental bridge or a dental implant?

A bridge uses the teeth on either side of the missing tooth as anchors whereas a dental implant does not need the other teeth to support it.
